Lions and Lion Prides of Kruger National Park

How many lions are there in Kruger National Park:
According to new data, there are between 1,700 and 2,200 lions in Kruger.
Southern granites have 10-12 lions per 100 km2 and southern basalts have 12-15 lions per 100 km2.

How many Lion Prides are there in Kruger National Park:
There are around 60 Lion Prides and/or Lion Coalitions in Kruger National Park, with the number increasing to approximately 80 in the greater Kruger Park.

Which part of Kruger Park is ideal for spotting lions:
The Skukuza-Satara Road- In the center of the Kruger, or at least on the route that takes you there, is what many people consider to be the one road where sighting a lion is almost a certainty. Satara is already a known hotspot for lion sightings, and the road from Skukuza to Satara is definitely one to go if you're looking for lions.

Casper The White Lion and his Shishangaan Brothers were born into the Shishangaan Pride in July 2014. Casper and his three brothers, Casanova, Footloose, and Mfowethu, currently control the Satara Lion Pride and are often seen around Satara Rest Camp in Kruger National Park, South Africa. Casper the White Lion is one of only three adult white lions currently alive in the wild.

The Satara Lion Pride, currently consisting of about nine lionesses as well as two subadults (a male and a female) plus two small cubs fathered by Casper the White Lion and his three Shishangaan Brothers.

Since Casper and his brothers are ageing rapidly, the two young Ngotso South males are spotted regularly in the company of the Satara Lionesses.

The old Ngotso male and his young Nkaya Pan partner were also spotted in the Satara area resently and probably had a fight with the Shishangaan brothers for control of the territory.

The N’wanetsi pride, consisting of three older females and one younger lioness, was previously controlled by the old remaining Sweni male, and he was last seen with them and his five sons during 2023. A few of his sons spotted away from the pride may be ready to begin their own journey of becoming pride males. The Southern Pride males took control over the N'wanetsi Pride by the end of 2023 but later migrated north and are currently in control of the Mananga Pride.

The Kumana Lion Pride was previously controlled by the two Mluwati male lions.

The two Fourways males and the Torchwood male controlled the Mazithi and Leeupan lion prides. But have later been pushing further north and seen between the S86 and Kumana dam in Central Kruger National Park on several occasions. It appeared they were expanding their territory and took control of the Kumana Lion Pride. The last remaining old Mluwati and his five spectacular sons still roam the area around Kumana dam.

The Sweni Lion Pride has had a long history of prosperity in Kruger National Park. They were flourishing under the care of the three pride males who took over in 2019, but in the early stages of 2024, the three males were ousted by the young, impressive Mayambula males. A splinter group of the pride still roams the Sweni Plains with the young Sweni males, while the rest of the females followed the Mayambulas westward on the S126 in the direction of Welverdiend Waterhole.

Senior Mbiri, a son of the Northern Matimbas, was the older brother of the renowned Mbiri duo, Zigzag and Shaka. Born in 2011, his journey took a challenging turn when he lost his brother and found himself unwelcome in his pride. Determined to carve out his own destiny, he ventured into the wild and eventually encountered the Rockfig male.

The Rockfig male, born in early 2009, was sired by the three legendary Ross males.

The two Ngotso Lion Pride males have been under pressure from Ratelpan males who have gone in and out of their territory since 2021. The Blonde Brother was last seen in June 2021 and is presumed to be deceased. After the impressive Balule males took control of the Ngotso Pride in 2023, the remaining Ngotso male ventured south and teamed up with the young Nkaya Male and are ocationally seen on the S100 and the H6 just south of Satara Rest Camp.

The Mananga Lion Pride was controlled by two old Shishangaan brothers who were the fathers of Casper the White Lion and his brothers. On March 31, 2023, Xihamham, the one father of Casper, was killed in a struggle with the two Trichardt males. The males of the Southern Pride appeared to be quite interested in taking over the Mananga Pride, which they did by the end of 2023.

The Hamiltons Lion Pride was taken over by the N'waswitsontso Males near the end of 2020, and about two years later the huge Leeubron Males took control of the Pride. The old Hammiltons male moved eastwards on the S125 in the direction of Kumana Dam with his three sons, where they established a new pride. They were still seen together by the end of 2024. The old male is easily recognised by the small part of his intestine hanging out from his belly.

The Shishangaan Mega Lion Pride was the most well-known lion pride in Kruger National Park. Xihamham and his brothers ruled the pride, and they also fathered Casper, the White Lion, and his siblings. The Kumana males took over the Shishangaan pride, but later there was only one left. He was being challenged by a younger male known as the Maputo male. Later, the two Trichardt males took over the Shishangaan Pride, and in March 2023 they killed old Xihamham, who was in charge of the Mananga and Mountain Lion Prides at the time. In 2024, one of the Trichard males was killed by an unkown lion.

Since the Trichardt Males took over the Shishangaan Lion Pride, they have had some encounters with the Southern Pride males, who killed the Trichardt males' first offspring, including the new White Lion Cub. After chasing the southern males, the Trichardt males moved on to kill the old Shishangaan male called Xihamham. The Pride grew under their rule and was once again known as a Mega Pride.

The males of the Southern Pride had taken over the N'wanetsi Lion Pride on the S100, leaving the old Sweni male and his six sons seeking for a new pride. The Southern Pride Males are currently extending their territory slightly further north and have been seen mating with Mananga Pride Lionesses on the S41.

The South Ngotso/S90 Lion Pride consists of two handsome subadult males and twelve lionesses. The pride was led by three mean-looking males who came from the S37, and in July 2018, they were responsible for the killing of four of Casper the White Lion's brothers!

The Birmingham Lion Pride is the most prominent lion pride in Ngala Private Game Reserve. The current dominant coalition of the Birmingham Pride is made up of two males known as the Ross Males, who took control of the Pride in early 2018. Their two White Lion offspring are now about five years old. The Birmingham Pride consists of five adult lionesses, eight sub-adults born between September 2018 and March 2019, two cubs born in late March or early April 2020, and three fresh cubs born in December 2020. Two more white cubs were also born into the pride in mid-2023.

The two males arrived at the Mluwati concession (Imbali, Hamilton's, and Hoyo Hoyo) with a bang after attacking and killing another male in the southern section of the Mluwati concession in September 2015. No one knows who they are or where they came from. They are about thirteen years old and have lost control of a portion of the Kumana Lion Pride east of the Mluwati Concession Area in Kruger National Park to the Fourways Males. The Blonde Mluwati hasn't been seen in a while and is presumed dead.

The Mazithi and Leeupan lion prides are currently under control of the two Fourways males and the Torchwood male. However, in recent months, they have been observed further north, between the S86 and the Kumana dam in Central Kruger National Park, multiple times. They appeared to be expanding their territory. The two Mluwati male lions once controlled the Kumana lion pride.

Xihamham, the old Shishangaan Male and Father of Casper The White Lion and Brothers are dead. He was severely injured and died from his injuries during a fight over territory with the two Trichardt males. History: There were only two remaining 'old' Shishangaan males: Xihamham and his brother. When he died, the two brothers were no longer the pride males of the Shishangaan pride but were still known as the 'Shishangaan males'. The two later controlled the Mananga and Mountain Prides.

The Mayambula Males are descended from the Mayambula Lion Pride in the Timbavati and were fathered by two Mbiri males, Shaka and Zig Zak Scar, offspring of the renowned Matimba's. The six brothers have taken over the Lion Pride near Bobbejaankrans and the nearby S36. The alliance of six young males is roughly six years old and in their prime, and they could pose a challenge to Casper the White Lion and his three Shish (Shishangaan) brothers.

The four "YOUNG" Mazithi Male Lions fathered five lovely Lion Cubs into the Trichardt Lion Pride.
The Young Mazithi Coalition is made up of three young Mazithi males and one senior male.

The Leeubron male lions are massive and huge. The two largest male lions in Kruger National Park right now. The big boy with the long face is the one. The other one is missing a tail tuft. They took over the Shimangwaneni Pride in 2019 and can generally be found along the S126/S36 junction near Muzandzeni, as well as as far east on the S126 as Welverdiend.

One of the two Nkaya males is the magnificent and unique-looking male lion with the cut in the nose. The two were originally the dominant males in the area of Sweni, but they seem to have been chased away by three other males who currently control the Sweni Pride.

The old Hamiltons Male Lion is easily identified by the intestine hanging from the stomach. He began a nomadic life after two N'waswitsontso Male Lions pushed him out of the Hamiltons Pride. Later, he founded a small new pride on the S125, close to Kumana Dam south of Satara Rest Camp in Kruger National Park, and fathered three young sub adult males with his new pride.

Two legendary Lions have died. Senior Mbiri is a Northern Matimba son and the older brother of the two well-known Mbiri boys, Zigzag and Shaka. After losing his brother and being rejected by his pride, he set off on his own, finding the Rockfig male and forming the Nsemani coalition. The male Rockfig was born in early 2009. The three old Ross males fathered this male.

BREAKING NEWS! We are absolutely beside ourselves with excitement after the discovery of ANOTHER white lion cub within Ngala’s resident Birmingham pride, this time born to one of the tawny lionesses. This takes the total number of known naturally occurring white lions to 4 on Ngala, and 5 in total in the wild. This newest cub is estimated at around 4-6 weeks old and was fortuitously seen as the mother was moving den sites. In order to give the mother and her cubs the best chances of success, the current den site will be left undisturbed until she is confident enough to begin leaving the den with the cubs. Until then, keep an eye on our pages as we wait with bated breath for the next glimpse of the celebrated little lions.
